Renew Your Dues Online

Dues for the 2011/2012 Leadership Pensacola Alumni year are due. Renew your LeaP Alumni dues online today with a credit card…it’s instant, convenient and secure.

From The Chair

First, let me say, I’m honored to take ove as Board Chair for the Leadership Pensacola Alumni Association (LPAA). Thanks to Kurt Larson (05) for his leadership of our Board this past year. Thanks to our current and past Board of Directors. Special thanks to Michelle Rushing (05) (Vice Chair); Melissa Chapman (09) (Secretary); and Sean Quigley (08) (Treasurer) for serving as officers of the Board this year.

With a new fiscal year upon us, we are excited about the direction of LPAA. In the past several years our organization has seen growth in numbers and visibility in our community. At our annual luncheon we highlighted the difference our alumni and origanization have made in the community. Our attendees volunteered for multiple charitable and networking events. We heard about the continued impact of prior LeaP class projects and the how the Youth LeaP Program we sponsor has blossomed. A new Youth LeaP class will start in September with close to 40 participants and promises to continue our commitment to educating high schoolers with the LeaP experience.

We are committed in the coming year to fostering Youth LeaP and providing our members educational and networking opportunities. We will continue the framework started by LeaP Knights and have plans in the works for multiple events with guest speakers/panels and a chance for our members to learn and re-connect. Please be on the lookout for reminders and “save the dates” for these events.

LPAA is built off its membership. Many of you have received invoices for this fiscal year. We thank those who have returned them and hope all of our members will continue to support our cause. Youth LeaP would not exist without your membership dues.

Please spread the word of LPAA amongst fellow LeaPers. We are excited about LPAA and its positive impact and we hope you will join us in that cause. Your support truly does make a difference.

Shane Rowe (09)
LeaP Alumni Chair

LEAP LINK | JUNE 2011

Annual Meeting

The LeaP Alumni Annual Meeting will be Wednesday, June 22 at Heritage Hall. RSVP by Friday, June 17.

Dues for the 2011/2012 Leadership Pensacola Alumni year are due. Renew your LeaP Alumni dues online today with a credit card…it’s instant, convenient and secure.

From The Chair

Coming to the end of a term is a bittersweet proposition. First, it’s hard to believe that a year has gone by. We’ve had some great successes and some things that didn’t go the way we had planned. That’s life. None of this could have been done without the great members of the Board of Directors. I have been honored to work with the Board who have struggled, encouraged and worked tirelessly to bring to the community a truly dynamic organization that represents the best of the Pensacola Bay Area. Leadership Pensacola continues to thrive because of the efforts of the alumni, and this organization is now on the precipice of great things.

Second, even after a year, excitement continues to grow for our group which is now coming of age. Our first alumni President, Judy Gund (04), built a foundation upon which we can soar. As Shane Rowe (09) takes office as your new President, the new focus of building the organization that meets your needs and provides you a venue to contribute to the community, the program and the future of the area.

I have been humbled by the support you have shown to me as your President. Thank you for your input, guidance, and allowing me the opportunity to learn from you each and every day. This has been a wonderful experience which will carry forward now that the torch is about to be passed. New enthusiasm, energy and direction are the challenge of the day.

We have been successful in accomplishing the establishment of an organization that is responsive to your desires. The Board works for you – the membership. We don’t exist in a vacuum. Those who have made this special are all of those who made it to the last Mayoral forum which was hosted by LeaP Alumni at Seville Quarter (and blamed or credited with the election of Ashton Hayward as the first strong mayor), attended the LeaP kNIghts where we have reengaged with the spirit of LeaP we had during our year as a member of the class, reunited with those who we have shared so many memories and are currently making more, and engaged the community to think beyond what we are today.

While our successes are many, so are our challenges. We cannot do this without you. Your membership is important on many fronts. Without members, we don’t have YOU to get the word out on what a great community this can be. No other group shares the cross section of the community like LeaP Alumni. One of our greatest supporters – PYP doesn’t. Neither does the Chamber. Only LeaP Alumni has a cross section of the young and the wiser. Business owners and community organizers. Government and non-profits. Those active in local politics and those who are members of the PTA. LeaP Alumni has it all. Now is the time for you to reengage.

I’ve heard it said that the only reason we want members is to receive dues. Dues are important but not the reason for our group. Dues simply make it possible for us to engage the issues you as members feel are important to our community. Youth LeaP exists because the members felt if we have a program to show our young leaders that this community has a lot to offer, they might remain (or return) and become successful right here. Is this the only thing we can do? We are only limited by your vision and level of engagement.

A wise man once asked me.., “What difference does it make if LeaP Alumni exists? Would the community be better off without it?” As I pondered the answer I thought about the 1200 people who are LeaP Alumni. Great names, familiar ones, and those who are only known to but a few. Would this community be better off without any one of us? I got my answer – NO! And not just a ‘no’ but an emphatic ‘no.’ This community has benefited from outstanding programs to feed the hungry, teach children to read, recycle our waste, save lives on the beach, and even encourage economic development when it wasn’t the local buzzword to name just a few. We have benefited from the outreach by working with other Chamber leadership programs. The Tallahassee trip during the class year is now the pinnacle of the legislative session with the largest group (LeaP, LSR, Leadership Walton, and Leadership Okaloosa) visiting the capital in force to identify issues facing our communities. This was started by LeaP Alumni reaching out. We not only provide an influence in our community, we do so for the entire NW Florida region. Now, that is success.

So, as I hand over the gavel to Shane on his installation at the annual meeting on the 22nd, I put forth to you to reengage this year. I’m not asking you to attend every function. Engage in this community. Engage in the Alumni Association. Engage with each other and your family. Whatever you choose, become engaged in life.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you this year.

Kurt Larson (05)
LeaP Alumni Chair
