How long has Leadership Pensacola been around?
Leadership Pensacola has been building community leaders since 1983.
Youth Leadership Pensacola was established in 1988 to enhance leadership development for Escambia County high school students. The program was an outgrowth of the Leadership Pensacola (LeaP) program and was sponsored by LeaP Alumni, the Foundation for Excellence, and the Escambia County School District. The charter class was selected from nominations by students in the International Baccalaureate Program at Pensacola High School. Plans to expand the program district-wide to include 39 students throughout the Escambia County School District became a reality in September 1989.
Youth LeaP students attended sessions to learn about leadership, their local government, culture, history, community concerns, and educational opportunities. The sessions were conducted by leaders in the community, graduates of the LeaP Program, and members of the school district staff. Students were given the opportunity to explore issues with community leaders, debate the topics, and express their concerns. Youth LeaP has helped prepare hundreds of today’s student leaders become the community leaders of tomorrow.
